TIMBERLAND
CELEBRATES READING
Olympia Timberland and other libraries in the Timberland Regional Library
(TRL) System will be celebrating “Timberland Reads Together” during
September and October. The celebration will focus on “The Secret Life
of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. The story, which takes place in the rural
South during the early period of the civil rights movement, is about
a white, 14 year old motherless girl who runs away from her neglectful
father with the only significant person in her life, a courageous black
woman. They eventually take up residence with three bee-keeping black
women. Some of the events taking place in Thurston County include:
• A Page Turners book discussion on “The Secret Life of Bees” at the
Olympia Timberland Library on Sept. 20, 7:00 p.m.
• A panel discussion, moderated by TRL Director, Jodi Reng, on the social
issues in the book at The Evergreen State College, Seminar II Bldg.
on Sept. 21, 10:00 a.m.
• A talk on “America’s Changing Families” by Stephanie Coontz, Evergreen
faculty member, at Washington Center for the Performing Arts, on Oct.
3, 7:00 p.m.
• An exploration of the central images and symbolism in the book by
Doranne Crable, Evergreen faculty member, at Tumwater Timberland Library,
Oct. 17, 7:00 p.m.
• A reading from the book by actress Jenna Lamia, at Washington Center,
Oct. 22, 1:30 p.m.
• Interpretive readings, poetry and songs to explore African American
experiences by Karol and James Brown at Lacey Timberland Library on
Oct. 29, 11:00 a.m.
