NEXT BOOK SALE MAY 22-23
The Spring Book Sale of the Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library is scheduled for May 22-23. The members only pre-sale will be from 8:00 to 10:00 on the first day. If you aren’t sure you are a member, look at the address label on the back of the newsletter. If there is not an “04” by your name then you need to renew your membership. Use the form on page 4 or download one from the Friends website. The address is www.olympiafriends.com. When you reach the web page click on “Join/Donate.” Pre-sale invitations will go to paid-up members. Announcements will go to all who now receive this newsletter. Book sale revenues have averaged about $3,000 for each sale. The on-going sale from the Friends book case in the Library brings in another $300 per month. The funds are used for special programs and to purchase items that are needed by the library but can’t be covered under its publicly funded budget.

BOARD NOMINATED
The Board for the Years 2004-06 has been nominated and will be elected at the Annual Meeting on May 11. The major changes are a new president and a new 2nd Vice-President. Jean Finely will step down after 6 years; Wanda Hedrick is the nominee for president.
Irene Osborn is the nominee for Wanda’s current position as 2nd Vice President-Book Sale Coordinator. JoAnn Sterbis will continue as 1st Vice-President-Membership; Mary Campbell as Secretary; and Beth Dubey as Treasurer. Nominations for Board Members include B.J. Brown, Larry Bauman, Wilma Bullington, Jean Finely, Mary Flannery, Vicky Friend, Robert Harris, Helen Keiser, Eileen Keith, Georgia Munger, Winnifred Olsen, Patti Trimm, and Sally Winslow.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION DAY SET FOR JUNE 20
An afternoon tea honoring library volunteers will be held Sunday, June 20th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the library. Cake, tea, and coffee will be served. Two local authors will discuss their books. Gary Worthington is the author of two historical novels about India, “India Treasures” and “ India Fortunes.” Wilfried Lippmann is the author of a novella entitled “Vienna Dreams” set in Austria at the end of World War II. Friends members, library volunteers and library staff are invited. Invitations will be sent out in early June.

BOARD APPROVES FUNDING FOR SUMMER/FALL PROGRAMS
The Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library approved funding for new programs for children, youth, and adults at its April meeting. Programs approved for children include Jason Quick, a one armed juggler; Stories from the Longhouse: Tales from the First People of Washington State; Jeff Evans, the magician; Don Ehlen with an insect safari; Cowboy Buck and Elizabeth; and Scottish music by the Wallace Clan. Teen programs include a Henna Tattoo Workshop and a Fantasy Writing Workshop for Teen Read Week.

Bryan Willis, a nationally known author, will lead a six-week writing class for adults. The Inquiring Mind speaker, Tames Alan, will explore the life of servants in Victorian England, She is an actress, historian and fashion history teacher. Roger Fernandes, an enrolled member of the Lower-Elwha Band of S’Kallum Indians will examine how tribal cultures are challenged to maintain their cultural identity. Margaret Hopestein who immigrated from Uzebekistan in 1990 will discuss immigration issues in the U.S. and South Sound. Sean Williams, an ethnomusicologist, will focus on musically related issues of language, gender, politics, and expressive culture.

COMING EVENTS AT THE LIBRARY

Page Turners*
The selection for May 7th is “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.” It’s an epic story of two talented Jewish cousins who at the beginning of WWII create comic book action heros who battle Hitler. Page Turner meetings begin at 10:00 a.m. on the first Friday of the month. On June 4th, the Page Turners will make selections for the next series of meetings beginning September 3rd.

El dia de los ninos/El dia de los*
April 30th is Children’s Day/Book Day. It’s a day to celebrate the importance of books in children’s lives. The celebration is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cookies will be served.

Summer Jobs Workshop
High school teens can get the facts on how to find a and succeed at a summer job during workshop on May 5th from 3:30-4:30. Topics include application and resume writing, interview skills and how to do well on the job.

Annual Meeting*
The annual meeting of the Board of the Olympia Timberland Library will be held at the library meeting room on May 11 at 10:00 am. New officers and board members will be elected. Cheryl Heywood, Library Manager, will give her annual review of recommended reading. All Friends members are invited to attend.

Highlights from March and April Meetings

Changes to By Laws and Job Descriptions were discussed.
Changes in the Olympia Library since the remodel in 2000 were presented at a meeting of the Timberland Regional Library Board of Trustees held in the Olympia Library in March. A few of the new features include an expanded children’s section and a new teen section, new workstation furniture, new office space, 10,000 new items, and 37 computers. The Library has a diversity of patrons and is sponsoring programs to meet the needs and interests of these various groups.
President Jean Finely and Board Members B.J. Brown, Wanda Hedrick, Mary Campbell, and Wilma Bullington attended the Timberland Library Friends and Boards Forum in Shelton on March 27. Sessions included a presentation on planning by Jodi Reng, Director of Timberland Regional Library and breakout sessions on the Children’s Internet Protection Act, generating public support for a library levy, improving services to the Latino population, and other general topics.
A new Circulation Manager, Adrienne Doman, has been hired to replace Leo Scarpelli. She comes here from Oregon and has varied work experience in public and academic libraries.
Spanish classes for staff have begun and will last about nine weeks.
The art work for the memorial for Jackie Williamson has been framed. A plaque will be ordered.
Carrie Dye and Sara Pete presented their proposals for funding youth programs and programs for adults. These were approved.
Final plans for Volunteer Recognition Day were approved.
A slate of nominations for officers and board members was presented.
